Whistlepig Double Malt 18 Year Rye Whiskey
The oldest release of Vermont’s Whistlepig to date. This limited-release rye is made from a mash bill of 79% rye, 15% malted rye, and 6% malted barley. The practice of malting a portion of the rye in the mash bill was once a common one, but fell out of favor decades ago. Whistlepig is bringing it back, showing us once again that the traditional methods of craft distillers were used for a reason - here, the malt adds depth and sweetness, creating a rye with all the characteristic spice we love, as well as a roundness and smoothness on the finish that is unusual for such a rye-forward mash bill. Tasting notes include oak, berries and nutmeg on the nose, with an elegant and spicy palate, softened by floral notes and round red fruits from the malted grains. The finish is wonderfully long and complex.
